Plum Gelato: It’s peak season for this summer fruit!

It’s plum season! That means taking advantage of peak seasonality to make gelato with the best ingredients nature provides. At GIO we always make sure an ingredient is at its best, handpicking our fruit fresh from the market.

Plums first grew in China before making their way across the world. Now, there are over 2,000 kinds. These stone fruits are related to peaches, nectarines, and apricots although they come in many more different shapes and sizes than their cousins.

This summer fruit has so much to offer and can be used in many diverse ways. Not to mention the health benefits this little guy brings to the table.

Is Plum Gelato Good for You?

Plums have a great nutritional profile. High in antioxidants and Vitamin C, they contain a ton of essential vitamins and minerals. They can also help heart disease, anxiety and constipation relief (as we know from prunes).

Plums contain:

  • Vitamin C
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Phosphorus
  • Potassium
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin K
  • Folate
Plum Gelato Health Benefits

Studies also show plums can help reduce blood sugar as they’re chock-full of carbs and may help with bone loss and even reverse it!

Gelato Brioche: The Sicilian Way to Enjoy Gelato!

As the days lengthen and we mosey on over to warmer and sunnier days, we thought it would be fun to introduce a new way to enjoy gelato. Born in Sicily, the Gelato Brioche is an Italian gelato sandwich enjoyed as a breakfast item. This typical breakfast bun is soft on the outside and creamy on the inside.

How to eat a Gelato Brioche

First things first, pick your flavors! We recommend at least one classic flavor paired with a complimentary fruit flavor. For example, pistachio, hazelnut or stracciatella with strawberry, passionfruit or sour cherry chip. Secondly, decide to eat your gelato brioche sandwich-style or with a spoon. You can savor each bite spoonful by spoonful or jump right in with an all-encompassing bite! The best part is, as you eat, the gelato will melt and soak into the brioche bun!

Where to enjoy a Gelato Brioche

Stop by our shop in San Francisco’s Cow Hollow to grab one of these delectable treats!

GIO Gelati’s 4th Birthday!

4 years doesn’t seem like a lot but well… a lot can happen in just 4 years. Let’s take a look back through time.

We started with the dream of bringing real artisanal Italian gelato to the bay area and we were welcomed with open arms! Now, after 4 years we feel very much a part of the community. We love seeing your faces every day and sharing a delicious part of Italy with you.

We’ve tried hard to stay true to our original vision of bringing only the very best to the table. Selecting our ingredients by hand and by seasonality to best enhance each flavor to its fullest potential. This may mean an ever rotating selection of gelato flavors but it also means the very best.

Our aim of keeping it healthy, organic and local means handpicking ingredients made in the California sun by local farmers. This paired with a dash of Italian ingredients creates flavors more rich than we can find even in Italy. It’s truly the best of both worlds.

We like to think we’ve created something special here. We traveled over land and sea to follow a dream and its still just the beginning. Our little business has a long way to go and we plan on adapting to the changing tides of the world. After all, how many gelaterias can say they have their own subscription program?

Cheers to 4 years and many more to come!

Thank you for all your support and best wishes!

Photography Contest Winners of Art at GIO!

This past month and a half has been an exciting time. Art at GIO: Chapter 2 really hit it off and we saw so many wonderful submissions from an array of talented high schoolers in the Bay Area.

Photography Contest 2021

At GIO, we’re passionate about sharing the important moments in life and opening our hearts as a community. Chapter 2 of our Art at GIO Photography Contest did just that. We asked students to share their experiences and feelings during this difficult time and they responded!

Our theme: “Stay Home & Conviviality – Back to Life!” invited students to reflect inwards and share moments from their time in home confinement, as well as the experience of living life through a screen and finally the feeling of life getting back to normal.

Chosen by a panel of professional photographers and artists as well as voted upon by the public, the results are finally in! Without further ado, here are our lucky winners:
